The Hong Kong Art Fair, as it was known before coming under the Art Basel banner in , attracted fewer than 20, visitors when it opened nine years ago. Even so, at Art Basel Hong Kong there were noticeably fewer mainland Chinese buyers who also have had to contend with currency controls imposed by Beijing at the end of last year. That the lack of mainland Chinese was so noticeable points to their growing importance in the art market. Christopher Reynolds, a Beijing-based gallery owner, is impressed by how seriously Chinese collectors are taking their art, says Anna Louie Sussman in the online art magazine Artsy. Chinese collectors used to focus on works by Chinese artists, but that no longer holds true. The silk-screen portrait formed part of a series begun in during a thaw in relations between China and the US, when President Richard Nixon paid a historic visit to Beijing.

Liu was one of many contemporary Chinese artists represented by galleries in New York last month during Asia Week, the city's largest event focusing on Asian art. This year, more contemporary Chinese artists have come under the spotlight with their global appeal. Margaret Tao, executive director of Asia Week New York, said, "We definitely have more contemporary art this year, both in terms of people specializing in it, but also those who have some contemporary art along with their classical pieces. Zhang Xiaoming, a former vice-president of Sotheby's who headed its Asian Modern and Contemporary Art Department in New York, said she is very positive about the future of contemporary Chinese art and the galleries exhibiting it.
Established in by David and Serenella Ciclitira , the Global Eye Programme is an initiative that nurtures artistic talent. The programme aims to develop arts infrastructure in territories where this is lacking, in order to provide artists with the platforms, support and recognition they need to develop their careers. It works to build networks and opportunities for artists and galleries through strategic partnerships and a variety of platforms. Previous projects from the Eye Programme include Korean Eye to , Indonesian Eye , Hong Kong Eye Malaysian Eye , Singapore Eye and Thailand Eye presented by Prudential , a series of international touring exhibitions and publications providing emerging Asian artists with opportunities to showcase their work.
